Loughquittane National School, Killarney, Co. Kerry participated in a small pilot programme in 2013. The senior classes participated on the programme. 3rd & 4th class presented projects on the native trees of Ireland. Each class went on a woodland walk to identify the various trees and ferns they encountered. Links to the curriculum were identified and topics such as; forests levels, photosynthesis, and the Carbon Cycle were explored. An Oak tree was planted as part of an Oak project while a cherry tree was planted to mark the retirement of the principal. They also planted a hedgerow of with approximately 30 blackthorn and whitethorn to mark the boundary of the school. One of the customs of the school is to plant a hazel on graduation day, this has taken place since 2010 and hopefully they will continue with the lovely custom.
